Interested in exploring UK movie locations but unsure where to begin? We've got you sorted!
The UK excels in film and television, especially period romance. With its abundance of grand palaces and atmospheric moors from historical times, it would be surprising if the UK didn't master period dramas.
The nation also boasts a rich history to inspire narratives, from intriguing kings and dramatic royal courts to secluded estates likely home to secretive relationships and passionate courtships.
We recently traveled to the UK specifically to tour some of its most iconic movie locations, immersing ourselves in beloved shows and films like Bridgerton, Pride & Prejudice, Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, and Outlander.
Where was Bridgerton filmed?
Bath, Somerset
The charming town of Bath in southern England serves as a prime filming location for everyone’s favorite Netflix period romance, Bridgerton. The series prominently features Bath's cobbled streets and Georgian architecture, which perfectly complement the show.
Be sure to explore the Royal Crescent, a recurring backdrop in all Bridgerton seasons, including the upcoming Season Three. Don't miss No. 1 Royal Crescent, the stand-in for the Featherington residence, which also functions as a museum. While the interiors weren't used in filming, they remain impressive.

The Abbey Deli in Abbey Green was used as the Modiste dress shop for both its interior and exterior, so stop by for a bite as well.
Additionally, the Holburne Museum served as Lady Danbury’s house, and the Bath Assembly Rooms hosted the electrifying ballroom scene with Daphne and Simon.
Though not featured in the series, consider staying at The Roseate Villa – a stunning, historic home turned boutique hotel, which feels like a place The Ton would adore for promenades.

Where was Pride & Prejudice filmed?
Chatsworth House, Derbyshire
For those visiting the UK to explore movie locations, Chatsworth House is a must-see. Whether you favor the 1995 TV miniseries Pride & Prejudice or the (superior, in my opinion) 2005 film starring Keira Knightley, the house—used as Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s magnificent estate—feels quintessentially romantic.

Upon arrival, you'll notice the mirror-like lake reflecting the building's facade. If you visit during opening hours, you can tour the interiors featured in the film, such as the famous sculpture scene where Elizabeth Bennett gazes at a marble bust of Mr. Darcy, imagining romantic encounters.
Where was Harry Potter filmed?
Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
If you're a Harry Potter fan, visiting the University of Oxford is likely on your agenda, as numerous locations there were used in the films. The renowned Christ Church College dining hall was an inspiration for the movie. You can even take a walking tour of Christ Church, which is quite remarkable!
A short drive away in Woodstock lies Blenheim Palace, the Churchill family home (yes, as in Winston Churchill) and also the set for Queen Charlotte, the fantastic Bridgerton spin-off.
The exterior and many interiors of Blenheim Palace were used in filming. During our visit, costumes were displayed in some rooms, providing a glimpse into the filming atmosphere. It's an opulent and magnificent building; be sure to explore the Water Terraces, where the final ball scene was shot. They're equally magical during the day, by the way.

Additionally, Harry Potter fans should visit the tree near the bridge with the large hole in it. Although it's not the Whomping Willow, it was featured in Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix as the setting for the flashback where Snape is bullied by James Potter and Sirius Black.

Where was Downton Abbey filmed?
Highclere Castle, Newbury
Downton Abbey enthusiasts, get excited. This is the Crawley family home, and seeing it in person will make you squeal with delight. Highclere Castle recognizes that many visitors seek the Downton experience, offering regular guided tours throughout the year, themed around both the castle's history and its use in film and TV.

Essentially, you can learn about both the real and fictional inhabitants of the castle. The interiors are exceptionally well-preserved and maintained, making you feel like Lady Mary as you wander the halls.

Where was Outlander filmed?
Midhope Castle, Scotland
If you're an Outlander fan, you simply cannot—CANNOT—miss Midhope Castle. It's the real-life Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family estate, and it looks exactly as if you've stepped onto the film set.

Unlike some other UK filming locations, only the exterior was used, so you can't go inside. However, the photos you can take under the archway entrance, imagining yourself as Clare who just married Scotland's hottest guy, are priceless.

If the breathtaking views from the opening credits make your heart soar, you must drive up to Glencoe National Nature Reserve. It's worth exploring through the various hiking paths, which you can learn more about at the helpful visitor’s center. If you're short on time, head to the Glenfinnian Monument, where there is convenient parking and a short trail leading to a great viewpoint for photos. Check out VisitScotland for more information.
And there you have it! A selection of stunning movie locations for you to explore when you travel across the pond.
Pip pip and happy travels!
