Sam Kerr’s UK Trial Has Kicked Off — Here's Everything You Need To Know About The Case

Australian football sensation and Chelsea's leading striker, Sam Kerr, is currently involved in a criminal trial in the UK. The case is based on an alleged event from early 2023, where she is accused of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer.

The trial commenced this week at Thames Crown Court in Kingston and is anticipated to continue for approximately four to five days. Given that the incident occurred two years ago, it might have slipped from your memory how it all began.

No worries, we’ve got all the details for you — here’s the scoop on the situation and its potential effects on Kerr, both professionally and personally:

Why was Sam Kerr arrested?

The incident reportedly occurred on January 30, 2023, shortly after Kerr celebrated a hat-trick in Chelsea’s FA Cup triumph over Liverpool.

According to reports, following an evening out with her partner, US footballer and West Ham player Kristie Mewis, the two were involved in a dispute over a taxi fare in southwest London.

This situation allegedly led Kerr to refer to a police officer — identified in court documents as “PC Lovell” — as a “stupid white bastard”. Media outlets later suggested she called him a “stupid white cop”.

On the trial's opening day, the prosecution asserted that the driver contacted the police to report their behavior. The driver claimed that the pair attempted to damage the back window of the cab and refused to pay the fare or the soiling charge after Kerr vomited.

Instead of taking them to Kerr's residence in Richmond, the driver brought them to Twickenham police station, where Kerr informed the police they had tried to call 911 and were fearful for their safety when the driver altered the route.

According to the testimony heard by the court this week, when the constable approached Kerr, the situation escalated, and Kerr allegedly repeated the term “stupid and white” multiple times.

Lovell later testified that the remarks left him feeling “shocked, upset, and humiliated”, as reported by the BBC.

Kerr was briefly detained by police on the night of the incident but was not charged until almost a year later, in January 2024.

At the time, the Matildas star was granted unconditional bail and has since entered a plea of not guilty.

Last month, her trial date was officially set for February 3, 2025.

What is she charged with?

Kerr is facing a charge under the Public Order Act 1986, specifically for allegedly causing harassment, alarm, or distress with abusive or insulting words, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald. The charge is noted as “racially aggravated”.

Although she was initially arrested for criminal damage related to the broken window, that charge was dropped after Kerr and Mewis paid for the damage.

If convicted, Kerr could face penalties ranging from a fine to a potential prison sentence of up to two years.

However, her legal team is contesting the charges, arguing that her comments were not racially motivated and that she did not intend to cause distress. They have attempted to have the charges dismissed entirely, citing an abuse of process due to the lengthy delay between the incident and the charges.

On the trial's first day, the jury heard that Kerr returned to the police station the following day for a voluntary interview. When asked if she believed her words could be perceived as racist, Kerr allegedly acknowledged that “anything can be perceived as racist, for sure”, according to ABC.

The prosecution further stated that Kerr expressed regret, saying she “wished she had just walked away and gone home”.

What does this mean for Sam Kerr’s football career?

Kerr has been sidelined since January 2024 due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during a Women’s Super League leaders’ training camp in Morocco.

She remains under contract with Chelsea, having signed an extension in June of last year, committing to the club until the summer of 2026.

In a late-year update, Chelsea FC coach Sonia Bompastor mentioned that Kerr continues on a tailored recovery program.

“I would say Sam, we are looking to maybe have back with us in February or March, but not before that,” Bompastor revealed, according to news.com.au.

Stay tuned, as there appear to be numerous details still emerging about this high-profile case.
